About employment in the area

The Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea ‘Opportunity Area’ is located within London’s Central Activities Zone – one of the most productive commercial areas in the world and a high-density employment centre.  New Northern Line stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station opened in September 2021 and are unlocking the district’s enormous economic potential – delivering up to £7.9 billion in growth and 25,000 new jobs.

Hundreds of people have already taken up local construction and engineering apprenticeships with contractors as well as job-specific training and certification courses. As construction sites transform into new buildings, new jobs are opening up in a wide range of sectors from publishing to hospitality, retail or management.

The area’s Employment, Training and Business Charter was agreed in September 2012 by the Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership. The framework aims to maximise the benefits and opportunities stemming from this multi-billion pound investment scheme and is available to read in full from the downloads section.

An Employment and Skills programme is in place which brings all the key partners and agencies together to ensure all our residents and businesses can take full advantage of the investment now taking place on their doorsteps.

Under the framework, every major planning application must include an ’employment and skills plan’ setting out a commitment to providing apprenticeships and local jobs both during and after construction. The exact number of roles is linked to the scale of each development project.
