Nine Elms on the South Bank is hosting a series of events throughout June as part of London Festival of Architecture 2015 (LFA), which takes place from 1-30 June.

As one of the largest regeneration projects underway in Europe, the area perfectly encapsulates this year’s Festival theme of ‘work in progress’. With over 30 schemes either in planning or under construction, Nine Elms’ regeneration will deliver a striking, modern addition to London’s South Bank. New homes, tube stations, public parks, town centres, offices, hotels (and potentially a new pedestrian and cycle bridge) are all certain to play a part in the creation of central London’s newest district.

Some of the world’s leading architects and designers, including Rafael Viñoly, Frank Gehry, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Sir Terry Farrell, Allies and Morrison, Kieran Timberlake, Kohn Pedersen Fox and Fosters + Partners, are reshaping the entire district on a scale seldom seen in an established world city.

Building on the success of Nine Elms’ 2014 LFA Programme, this year’s programme will look to reflect the area’s heritage and industrial past which influence the area’s vision and future, incorporating existing architectural icons such as Battersea Power Station and much loved gems like the Tea House Theatre and Brunswick House.

The programme of events will showcase the rapid pace of transformation across this former industrial area, which include:  a horticultural spa experience, walking tours which will trace the area’s transformation; an evening reception and panel discussion at LASSCO’s Brunswick House will explore the challenges of creating a ‘sense of place’; an exhibition on the Mezzanine of the UK’s largest flower market will showcase the 74 longlisted designs and technical drawings for the Nine Elms Pimlico bridge design competition and an architecturally-themed pub quiz on Battersea Barge in partnership with Londonist will test the minds of building boffins.

How to secure tickets:

Those wishing to attend the guided walks or panel session must register by email to nineelmsonthesouthbank@thecommunicationgroup.co.uk. The events are free to attend but will be ticketed to manage capacity, therefore pre-registration is essential. To register your pub quiz team, email hello@londonist.com.

Councillor Ravi Govindia, co-chair of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership and leader of Wandsworth Council, commented:

“This is a great opportunity to explore Nine Elms and find out about the exceptional architecture, urban design and planning which goes into a programme of this extraordinary size and scale. We’re redeveloping a very large industrial district right in the centre of a world leading city. It’s a fascinating project involving many of the world’s leading architects and designers.”

Councillor Lib Peck, co-chair of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership and leader of Lambeth Council, commented:

“The programme for London Festival of Architecture is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and find out more about the ‘work in progress’ around Vauxhall, Nine Elms and along the South Bank which is rapidly transforming the area. The impact of architecture and design on how places work for people is enormous and this part of South London is a showcase for some of the best.”

Helen Fisher, Programme Director at Nine Elms on the South Bank, commented:

“I am delighted to present our programme for London Festival of Architecture, which I am sure will replicate the success of our participation in last year’s festival. The programme will appeal to locals and visitors from across London and beyond, of all ages and backgrounds with an interest in one of Europe’s largest and most exciting regeneration projects. I also look forward to seeing Nine Elms’ new neighbours get better acquainted with London’s latest emerging district.”

About Nine Elms on the South Bank: Nine Elms on the South Bank is the £15 billion opportunity area between Lambeth Bridge and Chelsea Bridge, and is one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe. The area will be transformed from one of the capital’s last remaining industrial districts into a world-class destination right in the heart of London. Underutilised industrial land is making way for new public squares, parks, schools, Tube stations, homes, and businesses, which will drive growth and create jobs and homes. It will become a strikingly modern addition to the cityscape and a new centre for culture on London’s South Bank.
